Long time ago I watched a documentary, the name of which I forgot. There was a stricking scene in that documentary which I can never forget.
The director/host of the documentary is sitting with two Saudi students, they look 17-18 years of age. After 10 minutes of conversation, he asks them one last question, "Name one good thing about America".
The students go silent. The camera rolls on and on, the students are thinking, but they could not come up with an answer.

BwT has Indians, Pakistanis, Bengali, Nepalis, Americans, British, Swedish and all kind of desi members.
So, I want to see what the people here think about it. Go on, name one thing which you like the most about America.

Edit Note: Even if you have never been to America, the point of the thread is to still tell what is the best thing you like about America. From whatever you have read in books, or seen in movies or heard from people etc

e.g. If you are a Canadian or British, the thread is not about the Western society in general, specifically about America, as compared to where you are.

The best thing I like about America is that the people are most courteous and polite.

People won't break queues, they always say Thank You, Excuse me etc. Strangers will greet you with smile and a greeting anywhere. If you look in trouble, people will offer help. They will hold door for you. Public workers will speak politely to everyone and richer folk will speak with respect to the domestic help etc.

A very civilized society.

This is very subjective though, ever try going South. ? But yes, on a whole they are ! Something that severely lacks back home.

@ topic, Education ! However it maybe its recognized & most importantly VALUED ALL OVER, and this automatically rakes in the DOLLARS !

erm.. For me it is USA and Canada

The ability to go into any govt or private organization and voice my complaint and get a resolution without resorting to bribes.

The ability to fight for what I believe is right without persecution.. be it religious, personal, gender based or economic.

Nudie bars with full nudity.

The fact that my success depends on me and not on my family connections, wealth, caste, influence etc.. (OK.. I admit.. in some cases influence, family connections does make a difference.. But they can be overcome if I have the will).

I know there is not very much different in Canada and America in terms of good things, but there must still be something. Movie industry for one

mmh.. nice point.. I agree. My last visit to India with my Canadian colleagues.. They could not get over the fact that there is no concept of queues and people would rush or jump in front of them

But that is one point. To me the bigger points are the various freedoms I enjoy in N. America

Again.. To when I say what I like here.. I mean both USA and Canada and speaking from personal experience and not what I have read. I believe the mentality and advantages are basically (with some small differences) the same in USA and Canada.

Even in south you may have negative experiences but the point is that there is a mechanism for you to, legally and without fear, voice your grievances and at least have a good chance of having the resolved.

I love it here. Came here 11 years ago and now this is home. And here is just one of the many reasons. A few months ago I met this Indian couple who were visiting Florida. They had a 1 year old son who had a lot of medical issues as most of his internal organs had developed outside his body and he had undergone multiple surgeries and it was pretty much a miracle he was alive. The mother of the boy and me were having a discussion about all the surgeries and procedures the little boy had gone through and it made me realize that if the parents of the boy were in India would they have been able to save the child especially if they were not filthy rich? There are not many countries that would spend close to a million dollars to care for a child for almost a year. Even now the proud mom told me that the boy was in a study program and was being monitored on a regular basis. Am proud to be an American because the way I see it America has given all of us who come here and seek to be a part of it a warm embrace and a set of wings to be all that we can be.
